Vodafone Group plc (LON:VOD) has apologised for a “technical error” that left customers unable to use their phones abroad this weekend and landed some with bills of up to £9,000.

Customers travelling abroad over the weekend were alerted by Vodafone that their data had run out, despite having not used up their data allowance, with many also receiving bills in the thousands for data roaming.

On Monday morning, the network said it was “very sorry” and that the “technical error has now been fixed”.

The FTSE 100 company said it was “proactively checking accounts and fixing any issues” to ensure that customers “will not be charged for any incorrect amounts”.

It comes after some uneasy times for the operator, which has seen its shares almost halved in the past year and a half, not helped by a dividend slashed by three fifths in the last quarter to preserve cash as it completed the huge acquisition of cable assets in central Europe from the owner of Virgin Media.

Vodafone’s shares have been on the up in recent months, rising 25% since the start of July and little moved at 161.4p on Monday.
